On March 16, the Michigan State Senate passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 8, which opposes the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, federal legislation that would strengthen union organizing rights and restrict the autonomy of workers and employers.
Sen. Aric Nesbitt (R-Lawton), sponsor of SCR 8, said he believes the PRO Act would upend state right-to-work laws, eliminate the secret ballot in union elections, destroy independent contractors and the gig economy and lead to an uptick of lawsuits against businesses. Michigan Republicans urged members of Congress and President Biden to oppose these policies, which would diminish state right-to-work laws and infringe on the due process rights of employers.
On March 9, the U.S House passed the PRO Act by a vote of 225-206, with five Republicans voting yes.
ABC has sent a Key Vote NO on the PRO Act letter to U.S. representatives to express concerns about the effect this legislation would have on a wide range of industries across the country. The PRO Act now faces the 60-vote threshold of the Senate.
